I recently wrote an article called Moving from Fireworks to PhotoShop. Though I haven’t gotten a lot of comments on the post it does seem to be popular. So Part 2:
When I started using PhotoShop I found it a real pain to select layers and be the ability to change the size and shape with just a fast click. I didn’t think Photoshop was capable of this for a while. But here is how to do it:
First click the move tool:
![]()
Now to auto select a layer click the option to Auto-Select and chose Layers:

Now if you want to edit the size of an object click the Show Transform Control.
One of the main reasons I wanted to move to Photoshop was the ability to use Brushes. But at first I thought it was odd that I couldn’t change the brushes direction. The I discovered this:
First click the brush tool:
![]()
Then click the brush palette button

That will bring up the brush palette options:

Select Brush Tip shape on the left side panel. Now you can rotate the circle arrow thingy. (Not sure what you would call it?!? )
You can also set the roundness of the brush with this tool by dragging the top of the circle up and down.
One last trick is that you can change the size of your brush using the [ & ] keys.

Great tip David, thanks!
This just saved me tons of time. I havent been able to import my psd into fireworks correctly without having all sorts of funny stuff happen with the layers etc.. but I can import my PNG into PSD but the layers get flattened, and I can deal with that, but the biggest thing I love about Fireworks was the auto select layer feature which you have show me here! Thank you so much!!!
I don’t know If I said it already but …This blog rocks! I gotta say, that I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks,
A definite great read….
