After my post yesterday (WordPress 2.3 & Tag usage) I was asked this question: What are they really good for? Well let me first explain what the are not.

Technorati - They are not tied into in the Technorati website, or any other web 2.0 poperty at this point. At some point they may be, but not by WordPress. I could however see Technorati’s developers easily adapting their spiders to automatically incorporating them into their tagging system

SEO - Tagging in WordPress was not designed to increase your visibility to the search engines.

Category Replacement - Tags will not replace catagories, however there will be a tool with the new release that will allow you to make tags from your catagories. This way you’ll be able to easily set tags for your archived post.

So This is how I would define tags:

Tags are just meant to be one more way to help user navigate your site for the information they are looking for, while affording you another simple way to organize your articles. I also think the well be a great replacement to the what’s related section I have under each of my post.

You can use these XHTML tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>
